It’s easy to think that website pages have colors to make everything look nice. While it’s true that it serves to make websites more aesthetically pleasing, color serves a much deeper purpose than that. They are actually there to elicit certain responses from you, if color psychology is to be believed.
Color psychology is a sub field of behavioral psychology that makes associations between colors and human emotions, values, and attitudes, and having an understanding of it can help people who do web design for a living with their work.
Let’s take red as an example. We know it as the color of love and passion, but have you noticed how frequently it’s being used for ads for clearance sales? The reason for this is simple: red is quite effective at making people feel a sense of urgency when they see red. More often than not, your heart will likely skip a beat upon seeing an ad written in big, bold, red letters urging you to go to the store to buy something that interests you, or you’re going to miss out.
Blue, on the other hand, has a reputation for being the coolest color there is, which is why it’s often associated with calmness and serenity. It also happens to be popular among businesses, financial institutions in particular, as it conveys qualities that include intelligence, stability, reliability, trust, and safety.
Admittedly, color psychology is not an exact science. After all, people’s attitudes and responses to color are often shaped by preferences and experiences. However, while people’s reactions to colors may vary, the behavioral associations being made by color psychology tend to be closer to the truth.
