What am I currently listening to? This is actually a tough question for me!
While most people would start listing the latest Bieber album or a trending playlist on Spotify, I find myself sitting here with nothing coming to mind. With the exception of listening to my favourite “soccer-mom-in-training” radio station while driving in my car, I don’t listen to a lot of music. That being said, one artist has come across my radio every single day for the last 5 days in a row, and I simply can’t ignore it. Who has me cranking up the volume and singing along to the angsty lyrics of my 90’s childhood? No other than Canadian royalty herself, Alanis Morissette. The irony isn’t lost. After hearing 5 different songs from her, I was reminded of how much I love her music and just how talented she is. If you haven’t listened to Alanis in recent years, I strongly suggest checking out Jagged Little Pill on Spotify or head here for a laugh.
Ed Sheeran’s new album, No.6 Collaborations Project, features a a mix of genres and keeps your ears guessing. Each single features a different artist, everyone from YEBBA to Justin Bieber to Young Thug, and each single is a different experience. This mish-mash is a risk and I’m sure doesn’t please all critics, but I do applaud his boldness to stretch his artistic talents and release some ‘out there’ (different from what he typically puts out) and also gives a platform to up and coming artists (yay YEBBA!). I can’t say I am obsessed with every song, but as someone whose tastes also stretches across genres, I appreciate the diversity and effort, and love hearing more of my faves with good ol’ Teddy (Camila Cabello is everywhere and killing it!).
Lizzo is a QUEEN! Her newest album “Cuz I Love You” is a sensational combination of soul, pop and r&b. The album boasts songs about body positivity, self-love and female empowerment. Top hits include Truth Hurts and Juice, but if you delve a little deeper into the album, you’ll find bangers like Tempo (featuring Missy Elliot) and Like a Girl.
All that being said – this album is straight fire and should be enjoyed immediately and often.
Beware: Listening to this album will most definitely make you want to get up and dance or sing like a crazy person in your car.
Note: The album has profanity and explicit content.
